This interactive map set in the Warhammer 40K universe, shows the period of time between 750.M30 and 014.M31. It details the events of, and those leading up to, the Horus Heresy.
The timeline allows you to move through this period and see the paths of the various armies, individuals and groups that took part.
The map also shows the various territories, planets and other phenomena within this time period.
You can read more about how this map was made on Michelle-Louise Janion's blog.

To move around the map press the arrow keys on your keyboard. You can also click and drag with your mouse.
To zoom in and out, use your mousewheel or the zoom buttons zoom_in zoom_out (top-left).
Hover over the settings button settings (top-right) to bring up a menu of features that you can add or remove from the map.
You can turn on/off individual features using the checkboxes next to the feature name, or an entire group of features using the checkbox next to the group heading.
There are two modes that you can use this map in: timeline mode timeline and map mode map. Click on either of these icons (top-left) to change between the two modes.
Map mode is the default. It lets you see the placement of and information about all of the regions, planets, space stations and other phenomena that were present at this time.
Timeline mode will let you play through the events of the Horus Heresy and see how each individual moved around the galaxy during this time.
For simplification, some map markers will be hidden from view but you can always add these back again via the settings control settings (top-right).
In timeline mode a new interface will appear (bottom-left) that will help you to interact with the events.
Use the slider to move backwards and forwards in time, or click the play button play_arrow to play through the events sequentially.
Once the events are playing, you can use the pause button pause to stop the playback.
You can also navigate to the very first event skip_previous in the timeline, or the very last skip_next.
You can choose which individuals you would like to see using the radio buttons within the options section. You may only have one set of individuals active at any time.
Below the controls will be an information display that will tell you what events are occuring during the year currently displayed.
Location information - such as names and factions present in the area - is available for all regions and features.
Regions only need you to hover over the area to view this information. The information panel will move with your mouse and will update if you move into another region.
If you hover over a region or a feature, this will also highlight the area that it covers.
As with regions, to view information about a person in timeline mode, hover over their icon. The information panel will close if you move off of the icon.
Features require you to click the icon with your mouse to bring up the information panel. If you click elsewhere, this information will vanish.
For features there is a notes section within the information popup that tells you if the placement of the icon is from an official source or not. It also says how confident in its placement I am.
You can search for a particular location using the search icon search (top-left). Enter the first few letters of the destination you are searching for to produce a list of matching locations. Select the appropriate location and it will be highlighted on the map with a red circle .
If the location is not visible on the screen, the map will take you to it, placing the location at the center of your viewing area. At higher zoom levels, the map will also be zoomed in so that the individual marker is visible rather than the grouped one.
As you zoom further out to reveal more of the map (in map mode only), some features will be grouped using a special icon with numbers on it .
Hovering over this group icon will show the area that the group covers in blue.
The number within the white circle is how many items are contained within that area. The numbers in coloured circles are how many of that number are aligned with a specific faction:
non-Imperial human-aligned features
xenos-aligned features (Ork, Necron, Tau etc.)
Some locations are referred to within the Warhammer universe as being towards the galactic north - the compass will show this direction to you.
In the bottom-right of the screen you will see a set of coordinates - this is the location of your mouse pointer within the galaxy.
The minimap (bottom-right) will always show the entire galaxy. If you get lost, look at the orange rectangle on the minimap to see which part of the galaxy you are looking at.
You can minimise/maximise the minimap at any time by clicking on the down/up arrow icons expand_more expand_less.
