This interactive map set in the Warhammer 40K universe.
The map shows the various territories, planets and other phenomena such as moons, webway gates and xenos incursions in the current setting (edition 9).
You may also choose to view the Warhammer universe as it was during the Horus Heresy era. This is the period between 750.M30 and 014.M31 covering the events of the Primarch Project through to the Siege of Terra.
Also available is a timeline which details the events of, and those leading up to, the Horus Heresy allowing you to see the paths of the various armies, individuals and groups that took part.
You can read more about how this map was made on Michelle-Louise Janion's blog.
Warhammer 40,000 is a setting owned by Games Workshop.

To move around the map press the arrow keys on your keyboard. You can also click and drag with your mouse.
To zoom in and out use the + and - keys on your keyboard, or the zoom buttons zoom_in zoom_out (top-left).
Hover over the areas terrain, incursions pest_control or the locations place buttons (top-right) to bring up a menu of features that you can add or remove from the map.
You can turn on/off individual features using the checkboxes next to the feature name, or an entire group of features using the checkbox next to the group heading.
There are two modes that you can use this map in: timeline mode timeline and map mode map. Click on either of these icons (top-left) to change between the two modes.
Map mode is the default. It lets you see the placement of and information about all of the territories, features, planets, space stations and other phenomena that were present at this time.
Hover over the map mode button and you will be able to choose between two eras:
Timeline mode will let you play through the events of the Horus Heresy and see how each individual moved around the galaxy during this time.
For simplification, some map markers will be hidden from view but you can always add these back again via the areas terrain, incursions pest_control or locations place menus (top-right).
In timeline mode three new interfaces will appear that will help you to interact with the events.
Use the slider to move backwards and forwards in time, or click the play button play_arrow to play through the events sequentially.
Once the events are playing, you can use the pause button pause to stop the playback.
You can also navigate to the very first event first_page in the timeline, or the very last last_page. You can move to the next chevron_left or previous chevron_right events too.
Above the controls will be an information display that will tell you what events are occuring during the year currently displayed.
You can choose which timeline participants you would like to see using the radio buttons on the settings menu settings (top-right). You may only have one set of these individuals active at any time.
Location information - such as names and factions present in the area - is available for all locations.
For these locations, you need only hover over the area to view this information. The information panel will move with your mouse and will update if you move into another territory, feature or incursion.
Hovering over these areas will also highlight how much of the galaxy they cover.
As with areas and incursions, to view information about a person in timeline mode, hover over their icon. The information panel will close if you move off of the icon.
These require you to click the icon with your mouse to bring up the information panel. If you click elsewhere, this information will vanish.
For locations there is a notes section within the information popup that tells you if the placement of the icon is from an official source or not. It also says how confident in its placement I am.
You can search for a particular location using the search icon search (top-left). Enter the first few letters of the destination you are searching for to produce a list of matching locations. Select the appropriate location and it will be highlighted on the map with a red circle .
If the location is not visible on the screen, the map will take you to it, placing the location at the center of your viewing area. At higher zoom levels, the map will also be zoomed in so that the individual marker is visible rather than the grouped one.
As you zoom further out to reveal more of the map, some features will be grouped using a special icon with numbers on it .
Hovering over this group icon will show how much of the galaxy it covers in blue.
The number within the white circle is how many items are contained within that group. The numbers in coloured circles are how many of that number are aligned with a specific faction:

Some locations are referred to within the Warhammer universe as being towards the galactic north - the compass will indicate this direction with a red arrow.
In the bottom-right of the screen you will see a set of coordinates - this is the location of your mouse pointer within the galaxy.
On mobile devices this control will not show. Coordinates are still listed on the information panel for individual locations.
The minimap (bottom-right) will always show the entire galaxy. If you get lost, look at the orange rectangle on the minimap to see which part of the galaxy you are looking at.
You can minimise/maximise the minimap at any time by clicking on the down/up arrow icons expand_more expand_less.
